Effectively earlier than the Ted Lasso Season 3 finale dropped in 2023, the thought of a Season 4 was within the air. Talking to Consequence again in 2022, star/government producer Brendan Hunt confirmed that the story may proceed after the present’s unique three-season arc was accomplished, and because the prophecy foretold, slowly however certainly Apple TV managed to tug again (a few of) the unique solid for the following chapter.
The brand new season focuses on Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) returning to England to teach for AFC Richmond. This time, although, he’s teaching the comparatively new ladies’s crew. The Girl Greyhounds are weighed down by most of the points going through ladies’s sports activities in the present day, from a scarcity of sources in comparison with the lads’s crew to most of the people assumption that girls’s sports activities aren’t necessary. Nevertheless, regardless of the shaky monetary way forward for the endeavor, Ted’s particular model of optimism endures, and will nicely lead his new crew to victory.
The world in the present day could really feel very totally different than it did in 2023, however Ted Lasso stays in some ways tonally equivalent to what got here earlier than, aided and abetted by the returning characters. Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) nonetheless fortunately manages the Richmond group with the assistance of loyal Higgins (Jeremy Swift), and stays finest mates with Keeley (Juno Temple), who has adopted the ladies’s crew as her main focus. The boys’s crew itself largely stays off-screen within the first 5 episodes, so no acquainted faces pop up there, however Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) is round as their coach, as is Ted’s BFF Coach Beard (Hunt).

One other consistency: The present’s episodes are additionally practically so long as they have been in Season 3, stretching out comfortably into the 45-47 minute vary. By comparability, Legislation and Order: SVU episodes clock in at 41-42 minutes nowadays, which implies it takes Ted longer to unravel a squad challenge than it does for Olivia Benson to unravel a intercourse crime.
Not solely do the runtimes stretch out, however the season opens not in England however in Kansas Metropolis, with a full episode spent catching up with Ted as his former Richmond colleagues persuade him to return to London. The present does make nice use of the chance to show the tables on the Brits and douse them in some tradition shock, resulting in Rebecca growing a love-hate relationship with KC BBQ. Nevertheless, it’s a drawn-out introduction constructed on the premise that we don’t already know what Ted’s choice will in the end be — after all he’s going again.
As soon as there, he throws himself into understanding the nuances of ladies’s soccer, assisted by less-than-perky assistant coach Alice, performed by Tanya Reynolds. Reynolds is a kind of performers who’s confirmed to be a real chameleon whereas additionally delivering distinctive characters in tasks like Intercourse Schooling and Emma. — briefly, a top-tier character actress. Her dedication to Alice’s surly demeanor is absolute, although it’s unclear how the present intends to evolve her at this stage within the season.
Faye Marsay, lately seen working for the Riot in Andor and investigating a horrible crime in Adolescence, additionally stars as one in every of Richmond’s new star gamers, however her character is basically outlined by being a mum. The truth is, many of the crew is outlined by fast shorthand and/or their relationship to others: the lesbian couple, the sisters, the regulation scholar, the marginally deranged goalie who refuses to put on gloves. (Okay, the goalie’s title is Boots, she is performed by Jude Mack, and he or she may be my favourite new character on the present.) Because it did in introducing the unique males’s crew, the present has the potential to discover these new gamers in larger element, however to date the present hasn’t discovered a lot alternative to take action. (Regardless of these runtimes.)
The season additionally options some awkward shenanigans round Keeley and Roy’s relationship, which we be taught has remained in a holding sample for the previous three years. The alternatives made to maintain that pressure in a “will they or gained’t they” space solely show irritating — anybody who remembers the disastrous Sports activities Evening “courting plan” will discover themselves pulling out their hair right here.
When Ted Lasso premiered in August 2020, there was no query that its sunny optimism was precisely what individuals wanted at the moment. But the primary season was crammed with friction factors, from Rebecca’s willpower to destroy the crew (identical to in Main League!) to the battles between the large egos within the locker room.
Quickly sufficient, although, a lot of that battle melted away for a narrative about good individuals doing their finest collectively. A pleasant present about good individuals, sadly, doesn’t have a whole lot of narrative momentum, particularly when most episodes conclude with comparatively easy options to the issues that happen.
This was an issue that emerged within the third season and continues in Season 4, which means that these new episodes function loads of excessive factors however undoubtedly really feel overly acquainted versus contemporary — extra of the identical, with out sufficient evolution on the previous. Coach Lasso could be the primary to encourage one in every of his gamers to strive one thing new, problem themselves. Hopefully the again half of the season takes that very same recommendation.
Ted Lasso Season 4 premieres August fifth on Apple TV. New episodes debut weekly.
