Spotify isn’t stopping with The Breakfast Membership.

The platform’s latest deal to air Charlamagne tha God, DJ Envy, Jess Hilarious, and Loren LoRosa’s long-running morning present in actual time was a part of its ever extra aggressive push to be the dominant power in podcasting. Securing The Breakfast Membership syndication permits it to get folks engaged in audio content material daily, with out having to contribute any manufacturing efforts.

Per Bloomberg, Spotify has approached live performance promoters about licensing rights to livestream stage performances from music festivals. This might–like Spotify’s podcast efforts and fixed creator deal poaching–put it in a aggressive place with YouTube.

Why? As a result of YouTube has had the unique livestreaming rights for Coachella since 2011, and can also be increasing its personal stay occasions protection, most notably with a deal to start out streaming the Oscars in 2029. If Spotify begins going after comparable streaming rights, the 2 might wind up as challengers.

Should you’re pondering that Spotify and livestreamed exhibits sounds acquainted, you’re proper. It experimented with unique stay live shows throughout COVID lockdowns, when many artists needed to cancel main excursions and sold-out exhibits. The take care of these occasions was type of intimate espresso store; artists normally performed and sang from their houses.

Issues right here can be totally different, by way of content material. Spotify is tapping right into a market of people that don’t attend music festivals for one motive or one other (too costly, too far, an excessive amount of weed) however nonetheless wish to see musicians carry out and/or expertise the vibes from the consolation of residence. These would doubtless be high-production affairs.

However one factor would keep the identical: Spotify’s COVID live shows let or not it’s the linchpin that related artists and followers. That’s what it desires to do right here–and, presumably, it’d additionally prefer to discover a strategy to revenue from that connection.

Spotify has not publicly confirmed it desires live performance rights. But when it does, and if issues work out, it’s potential we might find yourself in an age of IRL/digital hybrids, the place a couple of hundred folks pay massive bucks to attend and 1000’s extra pay $5 or $10 to look at a stream.
