When director Leslie Iwerks determined to make Disneyland Handcrafted utilizing archival footage to depict the eponymous theme park being inbuilt 1954 and ’55, she had one lingering doubt: Are folks enthusiastic about a film about development?

Primarily based on the awestruck feedback on YouTube, the place the movie could be considered in full, the reply is sure. “I believe new generations are like, ‘Oh, it’s all the time been there,’ ” says Iwerks. “However they’re truly seeing the origin of it earlier than they have been ever born and seeing Disneyland in a complete new means.”

To make the 79-minute movie, additionally out there on Disney+, Iwerks and her small crew combed by means of roughly 200 hours of 16mm footage they’d obtained from Disney’s archives. A lot of the imagery was in good situation, however whittling all of it down grew to become an enormous endeavor: It wasn’t in chronological order, and all of it was silent.

Happily, Iwerks is aware of a factor or two about Disney historical past. Her grandfather, Ub Iwerks, helped to design Mickey Mouse, and her father, Don Iwerks, spent 35 years as a digital camera technician on the firm. She’d initially delved into Disney’s theme-park legacy when she directed 2019’s The Imagineering Story. The primary episode of that miniseries particulars the appearance of Disneyland, however with out an emphasis on how deadline-driven its inception was.

For this venture, Iwerks needed to immerse audiences within the park’s real-time improvement, so she structured the movie as a (pretty calm) race towards the clock to satisfy the corporate’s focused opening in July 1955. The ten-month timeline follows the methodical technical work that went into the method. Iwerks labored with Bonnie Wild, a sound mixer whose credit embrace a number of Marvel and Star Wars tasks, to piece collectively the entire sound from scratch — each creak of metallic, each footstep and hammer, and each tractor driving throughout concrete. A few of it they sourced from archival sound libraries, and a few of it they generated through Foley.

In lieu of speaking heads, Disneyland Handcrafted makes use of interview audio from a wide range of sources. Iwerks had almost 100 hours’ value to select from. Lots of the voices have been recorded by Dave Smith, the founding father of the Walt Disney Archives, with further commentary stemming from panel discussions and different documentaries.

“We actually began to see a typical theme, which was: It was so difficult,” Iwerks says of the park’s fast-paced progress. “The battle actually rose to the floor.”

The aim, Iwerks says, was to make a movie that anybody — not simply Disney obsessives — may take pleasure in. She has since heard of parkgoers who’re pulling up Disneyland Handcrafted on iPads to check the present-day facades to the outdated footage.

“I needed you to actually reside in it,” says Iwerks of the completed product, “minimal cutaways, all vérité.”
