Prepare for “Bloodaxe.”

“We shot the primary season final 12 months and it’s spectacular,” author and govt producer Michael Hirst, finest identified for “Vikings,” tells Selection on the Monte-Carlo Tv Pageant. The second season of the historic drama – set within the tenth century – is already within the works.

Whereas “Vikings” followers will flock to see it, “it’s a brand new world,” he stresses.

“There has already been a follow-up to ‘Vikings,’ ‘Vikings: Valhalla,’ which I had nothing to do with. It is a new story, set 100 years later, with a totally new solid.”

In “Bloodaxe,” Hirst will discover the antics of the warrior Erik Bloodaxe, his spouse Gunnhild and Egil, “a killer and a poet.”

“To me, Egil was a present from the gods. In Iceland, he’s one of many nation’s founding fathers. He’s stuffed with contradictions, so that you by no means fairly know the place he’s going to go,” enthuses Hirst.

“He could be light and sort, after which he’s fully brutal. Within the first episode, he’s sleeping with the wives of three fishermen, who maintain asking him for a brand new poem. When the fishermen return, they’ll’t kill him on the spot, as a result of “the wives wouldn’t forgive them.’” Egil is completely fearless. You acknowledge he has a soul, and out of that soul comes his poetry.”

The present will embrace magical realism.

“We reside in offended occasions, and all the things is horrible, together with a variety of the reveals. However I’ve at all times liked magical realism. King Arthur, the Bible – that’s magical realism, too. You need to be very cautious how you employ it, although, and the viewers must be conscious that you simply’re emphasizing one thing actual.”

Hirst continues to be very keen on energy, he admits. And households.

“Every part I write is about households – even ‘Billy the Child’.”

Now, he’ll depict an ageing king attempting to find out which of his sons ought to succeed him.

“Erik is a good warrior and an especially courageous younger man. Egil turned well-known as a result of he was such an excellent raider, however he’s impulsive. Then there’s Haakon, who was despatched to England to be introduced up by the King of Wessex. Now, he doesn’t know the place his spirit lies. One time, he goes to church and tries to wish to Christ however abruptly the room is stuffed with ravens and when he seems up, there’s Odin standing in entrance of him.”

The primary season will focus totally on the battle between Erik and Haakon, he says. “And Egil is the joker within the pack.”

Hirst turned a storyteller on the tender age of 10 – “I began writing little tales, and naturally I used to be the hero in all of them” – however his actual break got here when he met acclaimed director Nicolas Roeg.

“I used to be attempting to purchase the rights to his movie ‘Dangerous Timing,’ and I invented some excuse to see him. He learn my brief tales and invited me to his condo, the place I stayed from 8pm till 4am within the morning. These hours modified my life fully,” he remembers.

“He stated: ‘Your tales are all proper, however what’s it that you really want, Michael?’ I’d by no means considered it earlier than, so I burst into tears.”

Roeg threw his first script out of the window, however by that point, he had already caught the bug. His unrealized script about Napoleon led to Cate Blanchett starrer “Elizabeth.”

“I didn’t need to be typical in any means. Nic wasn’t, and he was at all times difficult me.”

“Elizabeth” director Shekhar Kapur’s lack of in-depth data about Queen Elizabeth proved to be a energy. “He stored asking native taxi drivers what they considered her! This enabled us to depict her as a younger girl in a very powerful place, and that’s why folks appreciated it. They might establish together with her.”

He provides: “That’s after I actually got here of age.”

“The Tudors” and “Vikings” adopted, however there’s nonetheless one story he want to make someday.

“It’s primarily based on a e-book referred to as ‘Montaillou: Cathars and Catholics in a French Village,’” written by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, first printed in 1975.

Set in medieval occasions, it explores the battle between the native Cathar sect, seen as heretics, and the Catholic Church.

“The Cathars believed that Jesus was simply an atypical man, after which the Inquisition got here in. The e-book is stuffed with interviews with the inhabitants of a small village within the Pyrenees. You get to seek out out about their sexual lives, their beliefs and the social construction.”

The e-book left him “spellbound.”

“A few of the issues they did and believed in have been out of this world. For instance, the shepherds would take their sheep over the Pyrenees in winter, the place they’d meet the Lifeless. And they’d alternate messages! There’s that magical realism once more.”

“However magical realism doesn’t work until there’s actuality.”
