“Individuals suppose dance music is simply superficial,” Madonna broadcasts early on her glorious new album, Confessions II. “However they’re all flawed. The dance ground isn’t just a spot. It’s a threshold, a ritualistic area the place motion replaces language.” That’s the brink the place Madonna has spent her complete life. Ever since she blew up within the Eighties, pop’s queen of queens has devoted her profession to proving how advanced, how dramatic, how ecstatic a dance ground might be.

On Confessions II, Madonna returns to the ground, the place the place she all the time goes to rediscover herself. It’s a sequel to considered one of her most beloved albums, Confessions on a Dance Ground, her 2005 collaboration with the London disco grasp Stuart Value. However it’s additionally her greatest album because the unique Confessions 21 years in the past. It’s a 64-minute nonstop groove that flows like a club-DJ set, every music fading into the following, drawing from all around the historical past of dance music. You would possibly hear a flicker of “I Really feel Love” right here, or “Apache” there, however it’s a historical past lesson that she turns into her musical autobiography.

She opens with a bang, within the triptych of “I Really feel So Free,” “Good for the Soul,” and “One Step Away,” a 12-minute suite the place she rides the electro-throb beat whereas pondering the internal neediness that drives her to the ground. “Typically I like to only disguise within the shadows,” she murmurs over a groove sampling the Lil Louis home basic “French Kiss.” “I might be whoever I need to be, create a brand new persona. Truthfully, I want I could possibly be like different individuals, and simply not care — however out right here on the dance ground, I really feel so free.”

“Convey My Love” is her heavy-breathing duet with Sabrina Carpenter, which the 2 stars debuted at Coachella in April. It soars on glimmers of Detroit techno, interpolating Interior Metropolis’s 1988 basic “Good Life,” as they maintain their dialogue on inventive inspiration. “Convey it, Sabrina,” Madonna instructions — a intelligent pairing, since she was ripping the man-children to shreds earlier than Sabrina was born.

 Editor’s picks

“Danceteria” is among the album’s most pleasant disco journeys, her ode to the legendary Eighties New York membership. She captures the joys of the not-yet-famous social gathering woman going out to fulfill her not-yet-famous pals, setting the scene with strains like “Get on the elevator/I run into Debi Mazar.” Recent from the Midwest, she’s dazzled by all the celebrities she sees on the membership, with downtown artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddie, and Keith Haring. However she’s starstruck in any respect the music legends: “Nile Rodgers and David Byrne/The B-52s had cash to burn/Lounge Lizards have a lot model /Decrease East Facet, take a stroll on the wild facet,” earlier than she goes off on her personal model of the “Doo de doo” chant from the Lou Reed basic.

It’s a music saturated in numerous generations of New York glam cool, translated to the sweaty democracy of the dance ground. She chants the hook “Everybody here’s a murals.” However that could possibly be a credo for her complete profession, from her 1982 debut 12-inch “All people” to “Vogue” to “Ray of Mild.” She sings concerning the thrill of listening to her personal music growth out of the Danceteria audio system — the night time DJ Mark Kamins performed her “All people” demo tape, the second that bought her a file deal and began her complete story. As a fan, Madonna was taking all of it in, from membership beats to post-punk to early rap — the last word disco fan was the last word disco mastermind.

The unique Confessions on a Dance Ground was each an apparent transfer and a profession peak, twenty years after she claimed her throne along with her 1985 hit blitz of “Into the Groove,” “Materials Woman,” and “Loopy for You.” However it was the final time — till now — she got down to make any form of crowd-pleasing transfer. Confessions kicked off one of many weirdest eras in a profession that has by no means been stingy with weirdness. She made a string of eccentric pop albums — Arduous Sweet, MDNA, Insurgent Coronary heart — earlier than the bizarro 2019 experiment Madame X, a midlife travelogue starting from Portugese fado to the ballet interlude to the declaration “Bitch I’m Loca.” A few of us hardcore followers occur to cherish this bizarre little album, however it’s comprehensible that the pop world was completely baffled by it.

 Associated Content material

Since Madame X, she’s accomplished deep digs into her previous, with Nineties archival tasks like Veronica Electronica and Bedtime Tales: The Untold Story, in addition to her career-spanning Celebrations Tour. That appears to have helped encourage the introspective, memoiristic points of this album. Confessions had considered one of her greatest, glossiest hits, “Hung Up,” the ABBA-sampling monster with the mantra “Time goes by so slowly.” However she spends a lot of Confessions II trying again on occasions passed by. “Fragile” is her pained lament for her long-estranged brother Christopher, with whom she reconciled earlier than his loss of life in 2024. “The Take a look at” is a shifting duet along with her daughter Lourdes Leon, the place she apologizes for bringing her into such a loopy movie star world. She quotes from “Little Star,” her tender 1998 love music to her new child woman, whereas the grownup Lourdes pledges her devotion.

 Trending Tales

“L.E.S. Woman” closes out the album with a pensive guitar ballad, on the morning after an orgiastic night time within the golf equipment. It’s the younger Madonna on the Decrease East Facet, waking as much as the daylight in final night time’s eyeliner, struggling to make the lease on Avenue B, however realizing she’ll by no means really belong with the L.E.S. boy at her facet. As she sings to her youthful self, “The night time is variety, the day is blue/Every thing fades away aside from you.”

After an hour of disco fireworks, “L.E.S. Woman” is a correctly poignant comedown. However even at that early age, along with her complete unattainable profession nonetheless forward of her, she already is aware of she’s Madonna. She feels like a hungry social gathering woman prepared to beat the planet. On Confessions II, she revisits these youthful desires — however she demonstrates smashingly how she made them come all true.
