Half of 2026 is now over. Many data from the yr thus far have been praised. However some data haven’t been praised sufficient. Listed here are 10 worthy releases from the primary six months of 2026 which are price testing in case you missed them upon launch.

The yr’s funniest indie album, bar none. A self-described “19-year-old boy who suffers from numerous degenerative circumstances and alcoholism,” Jim E. Brown might or will not be the stage identify of Philadelphia musician and filmmaker Max Margulies, who makes hilariously deadpan talk-singing post-punk songs with titles like “Ryan Adams Unfollowed Me On Instagram” and “I Am The Fattest Man In The World.” His accent is difficult to position — it’s type of English, I feel? — his demeanor is usually disgruntled, and his music is extraordinarily fundamental (the keyboard components sound like Casio presets). And but there’s a sure stealth genius occurring right here.

The members of this younger English band have been in pre-school throughout the prime of mid-aughts indie rock. However on their debut album Masquerade, they sound uncannily like a band that may have toured with Spoon or The Walkmen in 2005. The tempos lurch from stately to livid, and the guitars can flip shortly from soothing to scathing. However it’s all offered in a sequence of compact (and flamable) packages that ship simply the correct quantity of sugar and vinegar.

This Montreal band developed out of the late, nice 2010s period band Ought, who put out a number of well-regarded albums that sadly did higher with critics than a normal viewers. In Cola, they choose up the place Ought left off, refining that earlier band’s mixture of post-punk aggression and art-rock thoughtfulness on a set of songs that evince critical pop enchantment. These guys nonetheless have loads of concepts, however they’re additionally now arising with extra hooks than ever.

It’s exhausting to make the case this album is underneath the radar in Cornfield’s residence nation of Canada — it’s among the many yr’s releases nominated for the distinguished Polaris Prize. However right here within the States, Cornfield’s affecting story songs might use some further shine. Followers of Waxahatchee will need to pay further shut consideration, as Hurts Like Hell unfolds like a sequence of Carver-esque brief tales set to country-rock soundtracks, with Cornfield performing as our empathetic and wry narrator.

This New Orleans-based singer-songwriter made a stable first impression together with his 2022 Wellswood, demonstrating an old-school approach with narrative songwriting that recollects one of the best of John Prine and Warren Zevon balanced with extra indie leanings impressed by Damian Jurado and Jason Molina. However then a file label dispute delayed the discharge of his follow-up album Birds Of Paradise by three years. Alas, the wait was price it for this successful country-indie winner, which options backing from Dollbaum’s pal MJ Lenderman.

Again within the 2010s, Daughn Gibson made music for the darkish locations of the soul — again alleys, haunted amusement parks, Twin Peaks: Hearth Stroll With Me, issues of that nature. However after indelibly noirish releases like 2012’s All Hell and 2013’s Me Moan, he seemingly disappeared into the ether, for causes which are maybe greatest left the indie world, for causes unexplained. (He most likely simply had a life to stay, although I favor to consider that he holed up in a foreboding cabin someplace.)

Previously few years, David Berman has been one of the crucial oft-referenced influences in all of indie. A lot so {that a} sure fatigue could be setting in for rising artists pointing to the late, nice Silver Jews singer-songwriter as a north star. However then there’s the Bay Space band Mildred, whose debut Fenceline is likely one of the greatest examples of an indie act working within the Berman model. It helps that Mildred is a real band, through which all 4 members sing and write songs. Even higher, they function extra like a co-op than a aggressive scrum, and that buddy-buddy vibe makes Fenceline really feel like an incredible dangle as a lot as an incredible file.

For his first album as Ovven, Nashville singer-songwriter Owen Burton traveled to North Carolina to work with producer and engineer Alex Farrar, who made his identify working with MJ Lenderman and Wednesday. So, it is smart that Gnawing At The Wire features as a sort of homage to the indie music that’s come out of that area within the 2020s, particularly Lenderman’s Manning Fireworks and Wild Pink’s Dulling The Horns. Although Burton’s knack for barbecue-friendly guitar jams proves he’s no mere interloper. Few indie albums launched this yr are as instantly interesting as Gnawing At The Wire.

If you happen to hearken to this album with out understanding something concerning the band, you would possibly assume that Sunday Mourners hail from New York Metropolis. And you may additionally surmise that they put out A-Rhythm Absolute in 1979. Or probably 2001. However you’ll be improper on all counts. Sunday Mourners really hail from Los Angeles, and A-Rhythm Mourners is one among 2026’s greatest guitar-rock indie releases. This band excels at punchy street-level anthems that don’t skimp on perspective or bored-sounding insouciance, however in addition they can go lengthy with solos-heavy jamming in a way that may make you pressure for an authentic approach of claiming “this jogs my memory of Marquee Moon.”

This English band might be releasing their full-length debut It Goes On in August, however within the meantime it’s price shouting out the EP they put out in January. Because the title suggests, So A lot Nation ‘Until We Get There has some nation and folks components, nevertheless it’s filtered by way of a flinty garage-rock sensibility in addition to the endearingly youthful exuberance this quartet brings to their spirited stay performances. Westside Cowboy play each music prefer it has the potential to be the best music you ever heard. Even once they don’t fairly ship on such lofty guarantees, they nonetheless handle to mild a hearth within the soul.

Cardinals – Masquerade
