He was like, “Are you figuring out? Are you going to be in form?” And I used to be like, “You haven’t any thought.” (Laughs.) We had been working for our lives on daily basis on Prepared or Not, and I used to be in one of the best form of my life, so I used to be excited for The Satan’s Mouth. I did 4 or 5 motion pictures final yr, and it was a dream come true. That’s actually all you need.

You and Jeff Wadlow hadn’t labored collectively earlier than, however you’ve each labored with Jason Blum quite a bit. Did both of you speak to Jason concerning the different particular person?

NEWTON I like Jason, however no.

[Writer’s Note: Wadlow explains below that he reached out to another Blumhouse vet about Newton.]

WADLOW I’d been a fan of Kathryn’s for some time, and I knew she’d virtually grown up on Chris Landon’s units [Paranormal Activity 4 and Freaky]. So proper earlier than I jumped on a Zoom together with her, I texted Chris to see if he had any insights, and he replied instantly: “She’s extremely proficient, a complete professional and an absolute murderer on the golf course.”

Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, and Nico Hiraga in The Satan’s Mouth

          Courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios

You do spend most of your time strolling on fresh-cut grass, so what was your relationship to water earlier than this film?

NEWTON That’s humorous, and whilst you’re proper, I haven’t seen grass shortly as a result of I’ve been a little bit busy. I grew up in Miami, swimming and snorkeling within the ocean. So I believed that I may deal with this, and that’s why I wished to do the movie. I knew my physicality as an athlete was going to be highlighted and that I may make the movie higher. I additionally knew how you can rock climb. So Jeff actually knew what he wished, and he stored it actually easy. Generally, I might take a look at him and be like, “I can do this. I don’t want a harness.” And he was like, “You’re proper. Let’s shoot it.” So it was enjoyable to have the ability to do one thing and make it higher as a result of I had the bodily functionality.

Contemplating that nearly all the film is about in an underwater cave system, I feel you’ve undersold how unattainable this film should have been to shoot. Even when the caves had been tank units, it nonetheless appears unattainable.

NEWTON Effectively, it wasn’t as a result of we did it. (Laughs.) However what I actually imply is that I feel I can do something now. I had by no means performed a film like this earlier than; none of us had ever performed a film like this earlier than. In the future, we had been in the midst of the ocean, and I used to be ready. I used to be like, “Jeff, what’s happening?” And he was like, “We didn’t notice how a lot the digicam was going to be arising and down. We’ve received to maneuver the digicam.” There have been issues like that you simply simply don’t plan for. However I don’t suppose anybody knew the reality of what I used to be capable of do. They needed to put together for the naked minimal, however they nonetheless requested numerous [us]. Emotionally and bodily, all of us actually needed to carry it to make it work. Lana Condor is unimaginable on this film. So it was extra like a chance to rise to. There’s a film that we may have made, after which there’s the one we made. I feel we made it actually good.

Kathryn Newton in The Satan’s Mouth

          Courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios

Now that you simply’ve made seven horror motion pictures, do you’re feeling such as you’ve graduated from scream queen to scream empress?

NEWTON You’re humorous. I’ve performed numerous interviews right now, and a few folks have stated, “You’re turning into a scream queen.” Others have stated, “You’re a scream queen.” And now you’re calling me an empress. My empire is being fashioned. So it is determined by who you speak to, and time will inform. I really can’t consider I’ve performed seven horror motion pictures in any respect. Listening to you say that makes me actually really feel proud, and this one could be very totally different from something I’ve ever performed. I don’t even understand how a lot of a horror movie it’s. Oftentimes, I really feel like the flicks I’ve performed are extra comedies. I really feel like Prepared or Not 2 is sort of a comedy. I do know there’s horror parts.

With Satan’s Mouth, I’ve wished to do extra motion. I’ve felt like there’s one thing that I can carry to an motion movie as a result of I can do [the action]. That was why I did this one. I wished to check myself and see the place I’m actually at, bodily. You say you wish to be in an motion film? Effectively, are you able to make this one? Are you able to survive this one? Are you able to make it higher? What are you going to do to make this film price being watched? Are you able to entertain individuals who’ve all seen a shark film earlier than? You all know what’s going to occur, and I do know what’s going to occur, in order that was the problem for me. I discover these motion pictures make you very inventive and make you a greater actor as a result of it’s probably not relatable. You don’t know what it’s prefer to be chased by a shark. We don’t have to do this in our each day lives. So I wish to do issues that make audiences excited to see them, and I wish to preserve entertaining folks. That’s why I preserve coming again to [genre movies].

My editor loves if you and I speak about your golf recreation …

NEWTON I’m certain! (Laughs.)

If you shot on a golf course for Prepared or Not 2, did you carry a pair golf equipment to set and get your photographs in for the day?

NEWTON Once more, that’s very humorous. You realize they wrote that film for me, proper?

In fact.

NEWTON Additionally they wrote that golf course bit in for me as a little bit wink. However the heartbreaking half is I solely hit one golf ball that day.

You’ve modified.

NEWTON I do know. I don’t wish to speak about it.

Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton performs sister Grace and Religion in Prepared or Not 2: Right here I Come

          Pief Weyman/Courtesy of Searchlight Footage

Earlier than they returned to Prepared or Not 2, Radio Silence wrote an authentic sister film for you and Samara Weaving. Did they ever let you know any particulars about it?

NEWTON No, I came upon about that method later. I didn’t even find out about it. So it was behind their head that they wished to carry us collectively, and once they had been provided the prospect to revisit Prepared or Not 2, they had been like, “Perhaps that is how we do this.” And I’m so grateful they did. It’s not solely a superb film, however I additionally simply love Samara Weaving a lot. I’m actually glad that they gave me a brand new good friend.

Sam had a tough go of it on that film. Proper earlier than filming began, she may barely stand or transfer as a result of a again damage. Did she lean on you numerous throughout filming?

NEWTON I believed you had been going to say she had a tough go of it as a result of she needed to be with me on daily basis. (Laughs.) However no, she by no means ever swayed. She even received her nails performed with me, and she or he was in ache the entire time. Now she’s a scream queen. She’s a legend.

She’s a scream empress as effectively. She advised me that you simply by chance kicked her within the face throughout the sniper scene.

NEWTON Effectively, it’s to be decided if it was an accident, okay? No, it was completely an accident. I like her.

Did you panic a little bit bit since she was already in a fragile state?

NEWTON No, at that time, she was fantastic and succesful. She may deal with it.

Lastly, that is the half the place everybody within the Zoom gallery begins holding their breath. You’ve one other film popping out this yr referred to as Avengers: Doomsday. To ask the most secure query attainable, was the expertise the whole lot you hoped it will be?

NEWTON It was higher. I don’t understand how a lot I’m allowed to say, however the Russo brothers love these motion pictures. I felt it, and I felt empowered. I feel they made … I don’t wish to say something.

I noticed a photograph of you and Xochitl Gomez in your Marvel costumes …

NEWTON No, you didn’t!

I don’t imply on Doomsday. I believed I used to be shedding my thoughts as a result of I didn’t bear in mind the 2 of you ever sharing a scene collectively. However then I realized it was for a spot on a cruise ship. (Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams can be part of it.)

NEWTON Yeah, we did one thing for Disney Cruises. Isn’t that cool? Proper now, I’m on a Disney cruise ship someplace on the ocean. However I imply it. The Russo brothers are a special sort of director, and I really feel their love. I felt a special sort of power on their set. So it’s actually thrilling, and I can’t wait to see [Avengers: Doomsday].

***The Satan’s Mouth is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

![""]("https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/wp-content/themes/vip/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021/assets/public/lazyload-fallback.gif")
