The final one, launched in 2013, was so unhealthy it nearly killed a franchise that grossed near £900m. Naturally, then, we’re in reboot territory, with this newest movie the primary to contain the unique creators since 2001’s Scary Film 2.

There’s a way of event concerning the Wayans household rising as much as take cost of the script once more. Properly, let’s simply say it doesn’t final. The plot – to make use of that phrase extraordinarily generously – follows the inevitable return of Ghostface, who begins focusing on the offspring of characters from the primary film. This leads the gang of largely unmemorable children to spherical up the adults, bringing Cindy (Anna Faris), Brenda (Regina Corridor), Shorty (Marlon Wayans) and Officer Doofy (Dave Sheridan) again into the fold.

All of this occurs so rapidly it feels as if there’s a bit of the film lacking, although it’s unlikely anybody cares – together with, apparently, the filmmakers themselves. To be truthful, there’s a very good quantity of self-reflexive ribbing, with a properly barbed gag concerning the script (which borrows its set-up from 2022’s Scream reboot and final yr’s Closing Vacation spot Bloodlines) exploiting horror nostalgia. Saturday Night time Reside’s Kenan Thompson can’t fairly elevate a toothless Michael sketch, however there’s a good Weapons bit and a punchline involving the Wayans’ 2004 comedy White Chicks that acquired an uproarious response at our screening, suggesting there’s nonetheless a whole lot of love for the household.

The clan have tried to clean up the system by setting their sights on all issues ‘woke’ and have managed to take action with out being mean-spirited. “My household don’t punch down on folks,” Marlon Wayans not too long ago advised Empire. “We’re very inclusive in our comedy.” He’s proper and that’s to their credit score, but it surely doesn’t make the movie any funnier.
