TV Tokyo

Theme songs at all times do some heavy lifting, however when the present in query is science fiction, the duty is commonly even heftier. The most effective sci-fi themes should get the appropriate vitality going, set the tone for the world you are about to dive into, and match that world in its general sound, all whereas delivering one thing memorable and catchy in only a minute or two.

It is a huge ask, however the historical past of sci-fi themes show that the style is as much as it. From traditional golden-age themes to the trendy, sleeker stylings of “Westworld,” “Severance,” and “Tales from the Loop,” there are dozens of nice tracks to think about. However as we speak, we’re solely in search of the highest 5.

In constructing such an unique record, we thought-about the function every theme performs of their present; How central it’s within the reminiscence of followers, the general impression and recognition of the music, its potential influences on the style, and naturally, whether or not or not it is a scientifically verifiable banger.

These are the 5 finest sci-fi TV present theme songs of all time, ranked.

Lucasfilm/Disney+

The “Star Wars universe” is full of iconic themes — principally by John Williams, however, within the fashionable period, more and more from a wider roster of composers. Nicholas Britell’s rating for the acclaimed “Andor” — among the best TV exhibits set in area — has gotten loads of love of its personal, however the sequence’ major theme is one thing really particular.

It could be temporary, and it might not be the showiest piece of music written for sequence. However “Andor” does one thing distinctive within the historical past of sci-fi tv by utilizing a special model of the theme in each single episode. Throughout two seasons and 24 episodes, there are 24 completely different renditions, each fastidiously composed to replicate the tone of the episode to observe.

It is such a easy premise. As quickly as you hear it in motion, you marvel why extra exhibits did not consider it. The sequence’ personal arc construction, the place each three episodes or so ends in a serious climax, amplifies the impact, because the viewer is already anticipating what would possibly occur based mostly on the episode rely, making the intro theme variation a powerful methodology of setting the appropriate tone.

Whereas “Andor” could be very, very — nearly impossibly — good, its theme simply is not fairly on the extent of the opposite songs on this lis in a vacuum.

Fox

“The Ballad of Serenity” in “Firefly” was carried out by Sonny Rhodes, an extremely prolific blues musician. And in its temporary melody of guitar and fiddle, matched effectively to the cosmic frontier aesthetic that made the present so distinct again within the early 2000s, he lived as much as the title of “ballad.” With solely 14 episodes to craft its world, those that have not watched the present might marvel why it stays so well-liked, and why followers take it so significantly. Extra so than any particular person script or storyline, there is a uncommon vitality to “Firefly,” fashioned by its ensemble’s chemistry, incredible manufacturing design, good camerawork, and naturally, the music — each Rhodes’ theme and the bigger rating composed by Greg Edmonson.

So, what retains “The Ballad of Serenity” from going larger on this record? Fairly frankly, the competitors is simply very, very steep. Whereas pairing a blues ballad with an area opera was a genius concept, and the consequence stays iconic, some songs are higher. However hey, with an animated “Firefly” reboot within the works, maybe we’ll get an opportunity to listen to the outdated theme forward of some new episodes someday.

Paramount

You could have observed that we’ve not but hit what many would think about to be a “true traditional” sci-fi theme on this record but. And which will appear egregious, as TV historical past is stuffed with sci-fi exhibits that outlined the style, and sported nice music all of the whereas. “The Twilight Zone,” “Physician Who,” “The X-Information” — simply studying these names seemingly conjures their signature chord progressions, tied to the sequence in an irrevocable approach. The issue is, while you get previous these few seconds of iconic melody, the tracks themselves, as an entire, simply aren’t as substantial. It is extra concerning the sting than the them.

The exception, nevertheless, is “Star Trek: The Subsequent Technology.” The large swell right here matches into the identical kind of camp as these different themes, however within the case of “TNG,” composer Jerry Goldsmith (working off the unique sequence theme by Alexander Braveness) goes above and past. The quiet build-up, explosion of triumphant fanfare, and magical descent type a narrative of their very own, superbly embodying the tone of the present itself. There may be, in fact, a little bit of an asterisk.

The “TNG” theme is de facto simply Goldsmith’s composition for the theme of “Star Trek: The Movement Image,” which got here out years earlier than. Then there’s the matter of it being an tailored rendition of the “Unique Collection” theme. So, does the monitor really belong to “The Subsequent Technology?” We’re going with sure, for a pair causes. One, the lasting cultural impression of “The Subsequent Technology” is way bigger at this level than “The Movement Image.” And two, whereas Braveness’s unique theme is nice, Goldsmith’s rework takes it to new heights.

TV Tokyo

“I believe it is time we blow this scene. Get everyone and the stuff collectively. Okay, three, two, one, let’s jam.” There may be maybe no sci-fi present as intently tied to its music within the minds of followers as “Cowboy Bebop,” the seminal area Western anime from 1998. A superb mix of area opera, cyberpunk, Western, and movie noir, it is a present that oozes type in each inch of its aesthetic — from the look of the assorted area stations and ship interiors to the gorgeous jazz rating from legendary composer Yoko Kanno.

The entire sequence is an audiovisual expertise. Duels, chases, and quiet moments of reflections are rendered in vivid coloration, underscored by incredible monitor after incredible monitor. However after we speak concerning the music in “Cowboy Bebop,” greater than anything, we’ve got to speak about the primary theme — “Tank!” The exclamation mark is vital. This can be a brash, aggressive, layered music, paired with a gap credit sequence evocative of “James Bond” movies. It is hardly a standard pairing for a sci-fi story or a Western, but it really works so effectively right here, convincing you right away that that is the one approach the present may probably open. Few sci-fi themes can conjure the thrill of this one in just some notes, and hardly any are even near being this good. Shouts to Yoko Kanno, and Seatbelts.

Our prime two songs each being from anime should not be too stunning. Because the medium has turn into increasingly more well-liked internationally, the variety of iconic anime anthems has solely grown. However to this present day, the music more likely to flip probably the most heads, get the most individuals buzzing alongside — as if from their unconscious – could be “The Merciless Angel’s Thesis” from “Neon Genesis Evangelion.”

This monitor, composed by Hidetoshi Satō and sung by Neko Oikawa, is an establishment all its personal. You could not be within the popular culture corners of the Web for 20 minutes again within the early 2000s with out being inundated with covers, parodies, and customized AMVs set to the music. Offline, it is constantly been a prime karaoke monitor in Japan. At time of writing, the official YouTube music video for “The Merciless Angel’s Thesis” has a staggering 135 million views.

We may add within the cultural impression of “Evangelion” — a necessary anime — and the way the lyrics replicate the present’s core themes of youth, maturity, violence, battle, and trauma. However extra vital than that, “The Merciless Angel’s Thesis” is a banger, within the truest sense. It’s inconceivable to not dance to it, to bop alongside to the refrain, to whistle it hours after you heard it. While you mix impression, reputation, creative benefit, and the truth that it is the toughest bop on this whole record, you have received a compelling case for “The Merciless Angel’s Thesis” being the best sci-fi TV present theme music of all time.
