‘Failure will not be an choice” has at all times been my household’s catchphrase; it’s flight director Gene Kranz’s well-known line within the movie Apollo 13. After I inform individuals it’s our household motto, they usually joke, “That’s wholesome.” But it surely isn’t about being one of the best. It’s about refusing to cease being.

I’ve beloved Apollo 13 since I used to be a baby. To me, Ron Howard’s 1995 adaptation of one in every of humanity’s best rescue missions is the right movie to observe if you really feel you would possibly implode – as a result of they acquired dwelling. It’s a movie a couple of profitable failure. When the Nasa director warns: “This might be the worst catastrophe Nasa’s ever skilled,” Kranz replies: “I imagine that is going to be our best hour.” Each time I watch that scene, I begin crying.

Since I used to be little, if I couldn’t perceive an emotion, I used scientific examples and historic occasions as analogies and metaphors to clarify my emotional state. Because of this, it was by no means the trapped floating astronauts led by Tom Hanks’s Jim Lovell who fascinated me. It was the white-shirted, spectacled, chain-smoking engineers and scientists in Mission Management.

It was horny, crew-cut Ed Harris saying: “Let’s work the issue, individuals. Let’s not make issues worse by guessing.” It was Gary Sinise as Ken Mattingly refusing to take a break (“In the event that they don’t get one, I don’t get one!”) as he tried to get his pals dwelling.

Mission Management embodied the whole lot I beloved about humanity and studying: teamwork, creativity, rationality, calmness and respect for the info and the information. This was why, in 2025, when my very own methods module exploded, Apollo 13 grew to become my breakup film. On a balmy evening in Australia in April 2025, my relationship with my fiance led to a concrete lodge room beneath a flightpath in Sydney, quarter-hour earlier than I used to be as a result of carry out to 2,000 individuals.

double citation mark

The astronauts survive as a result of they belief Mission Management … Mission Management grew to become each WhatsApp group on my telephone

Immediately, my mind shut down and went into survival mode. I moved into my very own dreamlike Lunar Module (the lifeboat that saved the astronauts). I labored flat out however on decreased energy. In 2025, that meant touring Australia and the UK with a present wherein I pretended to be a horse, whereas additionally relearning three reveals for the Edinburgh fringe.

Folks steered tragic weepies to observe: Name Me By Your Title, Twilight, Blue Valentine. They mentioned: “You need to let it out.” No, thanks. I’ve to be a horse later! Give me a movie the place there may be categorically no likelihood of individuals having intercourse in any respect. I don’t want romance movies filled with tears. Phrases imply nothing to a depressed mime artist! Life isn’t romantic declarations. It’s actions that matter. It’s waking up, brushing your tooth and placing your garments on. Survival is Ed Harris declaring, “We’re not dropping the crew!”

The fast explosion handed; survival mode lasted for much longer. I used to be operational, however solely simply. The astronauts survive as a result of they belief Mission Management. In the course of the second half of 2025, Mission Management grew to become each WhatsApp group on my telephone. My family and friends made certain I ate, drove me to each present. My sister let me borrow and subsequently lose most of her garments. My brother informed me he beloved me greater than he had in his total life. Everybody lied about my new haircut. They stored me on the correct trajectory. They discovered the duct tape and rebuilt my lifeboat whereas I focused on placing one hoof in entrance of the opposite.

Signal as much as The Information

Get our weekly popular culture e-mail, free in your inbox each Friday

after publication promotion

At any time when I felt I couldn’t maintain going, I returned to the movie and revelled within the information that it was based mostly on fact. If Mission Management might get three males dwelling from the opposite facet of the moon, I might rebuild my confidence, journey the world as a horse and put together for the Edinburgh fringe.

Now, when individuals ask how I’m, I inform them I’m just like the crew of Apollo 13. I’m dwelling. I had a rupture, however I landed – and, like Mission Management, I’m specializing in the following mission.

As a result of failure will not be an choice.

Elf Lyons Is the Lady on the Edge is at Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, to 31 August.
