The rising singer-songwriter’s second album exhibits off a bedroom-pop sound that’s as influenced by indie confessionals as R&B valentines

Malcolm Todd is a rising star with a candy, lilting voice and a knack for intimate popcraft. However in the event you’re searching for the illusions of grandeur we frequently anticipate from rising pop individuals, look elsewhere. The L.A.-based singer-songwriter opened his self-titled 2025 debut worrying that he may not make it as a result of he’s “not a Harry Kinds” (one of the vital memorable admissions of comparative profession jitters since Pink advised us she wasn’t as fairly as Britney 1 / 4 century in the past). On “I Noticed Your Face,” a gently insistent monitor from his new Do That Once more, he affords “Life’s not a film/I’m not a film star.” However Todd wears his realism properly, discovering a pleasant combine between earnestly romantic and achingly self-aware. “I most likely shouldn’t do it however I’ll do it for the tune,” he sings earlier than throwing himself into what sounds prefer it could be an emotionally dangerous hook-up on “Breathe,” as refined bass bumps and lowkey Stylish-guitar flecks fire up the temper.

Todd suits in with artists like Omar Apollo (who he’s toured with), Mk.Gee, and Steve Lacy, musicians who blissfully elide genres and excel at boiling large feelings right down to essentially the most human scale. His metier is bedroom-pop that’s as influenced by indie confessionals as R&B valentines. “Jean Skirt” units sweaty clothes-on-the-floor imagery to watery guitars; the brackish ballad “Free99” dreamily displays on fading innocence; “Tough Love” luxuriates in the one form of love he appears to know over a luxurious hip-hop-tinged bounce.

 Trending Tales

The buoyant “Malcolm Within the Center” references the favored early-2000s sitcom (on which his father was a author and he appeared as a child), however the tune isn’t a cloying criticism about rising up almost-famous, it’s a posh reckoning with relationship politics, delivering bereft strains like “in the event you can’t inform a phrase I say then I gained’t make a sound” with forlorn verve.

The album groups with moments like this, bits the place the music would possibly evoke a contemporary homespun permutation of greats like Corridor & Oates and even Prince, and the lyrics add new wrinkles to basic pop heartbreak. “My doorbell solely rings when my meals is on the door,” he opines on “Lonely Track.” Anybody can relate to that feeling, perhaps even Harry Kinds.
