An surprising theme on this yr’s Edinburgh fringe is assisted dying. It’s central to Morna Younger’s After Celebration, a couple of matriarch who chooses to die after her eightieth birthday, and Ben Harrison’s adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies, during which a terminally sick man travels to Dignitas. It’s hinted at in Eilidh Mortgage’s Cathy, a couple of lady adjusting to bereavement. And it’s right here once more on this breezy storytelling present by sibling duo Maddie and Marcus Rice.

The semi-fictional story is about Maddie’s befriending of the 87-year-old Darcy O’Shea, an artist and piano instructor 50 years her senior, who is stuffed with zest and vigour. As Maddie places it, she is “unapologetically herself”, a lady residing a lifetime of completely satisfied self-reliance with restricted tolerance for anybody else. A protracted-gone companion nicknamed her Dandelion due to her sticky-up hair, and it fits her character.

Darcy tells it as she sees it and doesn’t thoughts shaming the youthful lady for failing to vary the issues that weigh her down: life is simply too brief to not plunge in headfirst.

As a narrator, Maddie has a sunny disposition and relates the story with some wit. Lest she get maudlin, she has Marcus readily available as a counterbalance. Enjoying fairly waltzes on the piano all through, he launches into songs that draw on the language of officialdom to comedian impact. There may be even some heartening viewers participation.

Realizing that dying is coming could make performs on this theme really feel like one lengthy delaying tactic, particularly right here the place the story has so little friction. Directed by Katie Pesskin, it’s best – if briefest – on the impression the encounter has on Maddie and the way in which it propels her to make adjustments in her personal life.
