Robert Laidlow is as at residence within the realms of science and know-how as he’s on the earth of classical music. As this NMC debut album demonstrates, his intricate, wildly imaginative work is eminently approachable, even when the core ideas are extremely advanced.
Warp, a terse, 12-minute piano concerto, proposes a musical answer to Einstein’s discipline equations because the intrepid Joseph Havlat boldly goes the place no pianist has gone earlier than amid the distorting material of orchestral space-time. Strident orchestral traces spiral ever upwards, stretching devices to their limits, whereas the piano maintains its course in direction of a serene conclusion. Handsomely recorded, the BBC Philharmonic and Vimbayi Kaziboni supply vibrantly detailed assist.
The Piatti Quartet performs Gravity, a harmonically unstable if barely verbose homage to Newton’s common regulation that at one level pitches the gamers into the musical equal of a black gap.
Silicon, a mind-expanding three-movement work of symphonic proportions, employs a cheeky wit because it reckons with the affect of AI on human creativity. Within the opening motion, Thoughts, Laidlow’s music wrestles with a machine that has been instructed to mimic his personal output. Physique employs teasing adaptive electronics within the service of diabolical musical deepfakes. Lastly, Soul pits the BBC Philharmonic in opposition to an AI algorithm skilled by itself broadcasts, phantom announcers and all.
