Emily Wilson, the classicist whose 2017 translation of Homer’s Odyssey was cited by Christopher Nolan in early publicity for his massively profitable adaptation of the poem, has roundly criticised the movie, saying “it has nothing convincing to say” and that it “lacks psychological, emotional, political and moral depth”.

In a scathing essay for the London Overview of Books, Wilson writes: “I had hoped that Nolan’s affinity with these Homeric themes would possibly push him to new artistic heights, and allow him to conjure extra plausible characters. However The Odyssey options his standard mixture of grandiosity and superficiality … the movie’s imaginative and prescient is simply too confused, its characters too underdeveloped, to ship what it half-promises when it comes to large concepts – though it is vitally good at conveying large bangs and large giants.”

Wilson provides: “Nolan’s Odyssey lacks most of the parts that make the poem nice. It has nothing convincing to say about time, reminiscence, historical past, struggle, or concerning the relationship between one warrior’s superb return and the lives of his household, adversaries, comrades, associates and neighbours. It lacks psychological, emotional, political and moral depth. Its narrative construction is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. Not one of the characters has convincing motivation for his or her actions or phrases. There aren’t any intercourse scenes, and all of the meals appears horrible.”

Wilson additionally famous Nolan’s admiration for the opening line of her Odyssey translation: “Inform me a few difficult man” – however added: “I’d be ashamed to have written any a part of this script.”

Wilson, who’s division chair and professor of classical research on the College of Pennsylvania, additionally went on the assault in an interview with the Sunday Instances, saying: “It didn’t land emotionally for me in any respect. Which I believe is partly about the truth that, not like Homer, it’s not very nicely written.”

“The characters don’t have the sort of depth the Homeric characters have. I felt, ‘Do I actually care if this man will get again to his spouse?’ You haven’t given me any purpose to.”

However, Wilson acknowledged the affect the movie is already having on cultural consciousness of historical Greek literature in addition to cinema itself. Saying “the discharge of The Odyssey remains to be an occasion to have a good time,” she suggests: “This epic is bringing audiences again to cinemas … translations of Odyssey, together with mine, are flying off the cabinets … [and] maybe the movie will persuade just a few school directors to not lower their literature, language and historical past departments.”

“Nolan,” Wilson says, “is doing his greatest to get most people studying once more, and I’m grateful.”
